The Anambra State Commissioner for Enviornment, Dr. Michael Egbebike, has said that funding is a major constraint to proper management and effective disposal of waste in major cities in the state.

Speaking with our correspondent, Egbebike said: “We are constrained by the lack of adequate funds in the disposal of waste in our major cities.

“In everything you do as a human being, fund is very important for it to be worthwhile and successful.”

He also said that the ministry lacked vehicles and receptacles for operational efficiency and effectiveness.

According to him, the insufficiency of the neccesary working materials has hampered the management of waste.

“We do not have enough receptacles and vehicles; so, we are basically struggling with the little we have to evacuate refuse.

“We have, however, achieved one objective of removing waste from the gutters into the receptacles which used to be the practice.”

The commissioner, however, said that the government had ordered for new vehicles and receptacles in its efforts to increase the tempo of waste disposal in the state.
