Spiff, Ada-George Back Fuel Subsidy Removal
The first Military Governor of old Rivers State, King Alfred Diete-Spiff and a former governor of River State, Chief Rufus Ada-George, have thrown their weight behind the removal of fuel subsidy as planned by the presidency in 2012.
King Spiff and Ada-George made their views known while speaking at the silver jubilee anniversary of Rivbond Club, a socio-political organisation in Rivers and Bayelsa States, recently held in Port Harcourt.
Addressing members of the club, King Diete Spiff, who is also the Amayanabo of Twon Brass in Bayelsa State, said the deregulation of the petroleum sector was over due in order to check the excesses of a cartel in the industry that was holding everybody to ransom.
According to him, the fuel subsidy only favours the rich in the society, arguing that if removed, the benefit of the exercise will spread out to majority of the citizenry.
Chief Ada-George, who shared the views of King Diete Spiff also appealed for understanding of Nigerians on the deregulation policy of the Federal Government arguing that it has a long time benefit to the country.
Chief Ada-George also charged members of Rivbond Club to monitor the behaviour of young ones even as he stressed the need to inculcate into them the virtues of hardwork.
In his welcome address, the president of the club, Tonye David-West Horsefall said the aim of the anniversary was to express gratitude to God for the progress recorded in the lives of members and the club in its twenty five years of existence.
The chairman of the occasion, Dr. Zeb Obipi thanked members for service to humanity but challenged them that a lot more needed to be done to boost the living standard of the citizenry.
Dr. Obipi said no effort should be spared in repositioning the society to boost living standard.
He, therefore, called for a collective support of all and sundry in government policies and programmes.
High point of the occasion was the award to King Diete Spiff, Chief Ada-George, Chief DSP Alamieyseigha, former executive governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Nimi Barigha-Amange, Engineer Pedro Egbe, Chief executive officer Weltek Inc. and Alabo Omubo Isokariari, former Managing Director NAFCON.
