SON Declares War Against Fake Generating Sets

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), says it is ready to rid markets in the country of substandard generating sets.

Dr. Joseph Odumodu, the SON Director-General, made the declaration in an interview with newsmen in Lagos on Monday.

Odumodu said that SON would meet with both the local manufacturers and importers in Lagos on December 7 to find a lasting solution to the problems.

According to him, it has been established that the life spans of generators in the Nigerian markets are below the claims of their manufacturers.

Odumodu stressed that about 50 per cent of the generating sets in the market were rated higher than their actual capacity while more than 30 per cent were sub-standard.

He also said that the generators produced high noise, in spite of the claims by manufacturers that they were sound efficient.

Odumodu said that there was a very high level of counterfeiting of the approved generators with low quality winding wire.

“All importers and assemblers of the generating sets must meet the required standards, especially the Nigeria Industrial Standard (NIS),’’ he said.

The SON director-general advised the importers to assist SON in identifying individuals and organisations behind importation of substandard generating sets.
