Worried by the spate of breakdown of roads and collapse of building across the country, the Director General of the National Orientation Agency, Professor Idii Farouk has called for the proper regulation of the building industry, to make the sector more responsive to the yearnings of the public.

Professor Farouk who was speaking with newsmen on the spate of collapse of buildings in Nigeria said that research has revealed that 80 percent of the contracts were not supervised for quality control before such buildings got executed.

The NOA boss who was accompanied by other professionals of the Nigeria Building and Road Research Institute (NIBRFI) stated that using wrong materials were responsible for road and buildings collapse in Nigeria, pointing out that there is a trial stage to know and test the quality of materials used.

He said that without proper regulation in the industry, many known lapses that caused problems to the sector will still be there. He pointed out that a situation where materials and machines used for road construction and building development are not properly tested by the right people can cause great damage.

According to him, “a registered builder who has passed through necessary process shold play his role in supervision of the building to ensure that certain specifications are met and being complied with by the parties involved, and this can be achievable through proper regulation.”

Farouk also posited that specific design must be developed for any project, and this will help to check unnecessary rush, for contractors are always in a hurry and in the process do wrong things.

He however urged artisans and craftmen who have been in the field for a long time to always obey the instruction of professional engineers, irrespective of their years of experience in the field, saying that this will create the required sanity in the sector.
