The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has said that it would continue to oppose the planned removal of fuel subsidy until the Federal Government dropped the idea.

Mr. Promise Adewusi, the Deputy President, stated this in Abeokuta at an award ceremony, organised by members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) of the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (UNAAB).

“In spite of the arguments advanced in favour of the removal of fuel subsidy, we are not convinced and we would continue to say not to it,” he said.

He said the congress opposed the idea because it would have negative multiplier effect on the people and further impoverish them.

On insecurity in the country, Adewusi called on the Federal Government “to arrest the spate of violence in the country”.

He further urged government to pay more attention to the provision of security rather than the removal of oil subsidy.

Adewusi who was honoured with the award of “Icon of SSANU” advised members to remain resolute in their struggle “for the defense of the oppressed in the society.”

Prof. Olaiya Balogun, the Vice Chancellor, UNAAB, commended the leadership and members of SSANU for their creativity and ingenuity in organising the award.

He expressed delight that the leadership of SSANU in the university had always demonstrated maturity and understanding in dealing with the authorities of the institution.
