Mobile Court Convicts 33 Traffic Offenders
No fewer than 33 traffic offenders arrested last week by the Enugu State Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) have been tried and convicted by a Mobile Court for violating various traffic rules and regulations.
Disclosing this at the weekend while speaking with newsmen at Udi local government council of Enugu State, Corp Marshal and Chief Executive of FRSC, Mr. Osita Chidoka, blamed most of the road crashes on bad roads, including what he described as human factors such as over speeding, use of unserviceable vehicles, among other carelessness by motorists in the country.
Chidoka, explained that the nation wide surveillance was aimed at ensuring sanity on the roads as well as instilling discipline on motorists especially during this festive period that roads are witnessing serious and heavy vehicular movements from one part of the country to another..
He , therefore, warned motorists both commercial and private car owners to always observe all traffic rules and regulations while on wheel, insisting that any driver found wanting would be punished no matter the persons status in the society.
The FRSC boss who spoke through the Assistant Corp Marshal who is also the Commission’s legal Adviser, Mr. Chidi Nwachukwu, however expressed satisfaction with the free flow of vehicles in various parts of the state which used to be very hectic during festivities, attributing the development to the heavy presence of their men and other sister security agencies including personnel of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) .
“My message to all motorists during this festive period is that they should drive with caution. They must obey all traffic rules, they should avoid over speeding. This surveillance is to ensure free flow of vehicles on the roads, and the exercise is covering all parts of the state”, he said.
Also speaking with newsmen, the Enugu State Sector Commander of FRSC, Mr. Hyginous Fuomsuk, expressed happiness with the impressive manner the assignment was carry out, adding that it was in line with the Commission’s operation zero tolerance policy aimed at actualising the Global Decade of Action Programme.
The Sector Commander, hinted that only one fatal road crash had so far been recorded since the festive period, pointing out that the accident, which occurred around Umunba area along the Enugu – Onitsha express way in Oji River local government council of Enugu State on December 21st this year, involved a commercial bus with registration number, XG815 USL and an unmarked trailer.
The crash which he said was caused by over – speeding and other forms of dangerous driving, sent a total of six of the bus passengers including two females, two males, as well as two children to their untimely graves, while 11 persons sustained various degrees of injuries .
