The Deputy Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon Leyii Kwane, has said that grassroots sports development has taken a centrestage in his constituency development plans.

Hon. Kwane disclosed this when members of League of Sports Writers (LSW) in the state paid him a courtesy visit in his office, on Wednesday, in Port Harcourt.

He stated that, shortly after he was sworn in as a member of the state Assembly, he decided to embark on sports development in his constituency in particular and the state at large.

“When I came into the Assembly to represent the people of Khana Constituency II, one thing that came into my mind was to look at sports development in all its ramifications.

“You are aware that the idle mind is the devil’s workshop and I don’t want such a thing to happen in my area,” Hon. Kwane said.

The lawmaker further said that the on going football competition tagged “Nyor Khana Unity Cup” was being sponsored by him.

He also said that he was impressed with the turn out of the people and the organizational aspect of the tournament.

“As I am talking to you now, I have setup a small sports committee in my constituency to organise a football tournament tagged “Nyor Khana Unity Cup.”

My aim is to discover enough  football talents for the state and ensure that youths are meaningfully engaged through sporting activities,” the lawmaker stated.

Hon Kwane pledged to assist the body to help it achieve set targets.

He expressed joy over the achievements of LSW within the short period of existence and promised to communicate the demands of the organization to the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Otelemaba Amachree for necessary assistance.

Earlier, a member of the league, Mr. Opiki Jim-Udede listed the achievements of the body to include promoting  grassroots sports and embarking on enlightenment campaign.

In his vote of thanks, Tonye Orabere, said the association would continue to assist the lawmaker to promote his sports programmes and thanked him for the opportunity given to the body.
