INEC, Political Parties Meet Over Re-Run Election
The Independent Electoral Commission INEC), has reassured that it would continue to be fair to all political parties in the country as it prepares for the re-run election in Rivers East Senatorial District next month.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner Rivers State, Elder Aniedi Ikoiwak who gave the assurance yesterday while meeting with Political Parties in rivers State, ahead of the national Assembly re-run election for rivers East Senatorial district, noted that the election was nullified by the Appeal Court not because of its credibility, because of the exclusion of party logo in the electoral material.
The REC noted that the January 5 date was fixed by the National Headquarters of INEC and urged all political parties to mobilise their members for the election.
According to him, “INEC is only complying to the order of the court to call for re-run election and assured that all parties would be given equal opportunity.
He said the political parties were invited to a meeting to discuss how to attain and sustain a credible, free and fair re-run election in the area, adding that all hands must be on deck to sustain that goal.
“To have a free and fair election, it requires the contributions of everybody including the political parties, National Youths Service Corps, security agencies and the National Orientation Agency (NOA),” ge saud.
Ikoiwak said the decision of the Appeal Court early in the month, had again proven that INEC, the court and other institutions have powers in their various ways.
