Rivers State Deputy Governor, Engr. Tele Ikuru has charged the National Boundary Commission (NBC), the office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation and other stakeholders to take proactive steps in resolving Rivers/Imo inter-State boundary disputes to ensure lasting peace between the two States.

Engr. Ikuru said this today during the Joint Meeting of the officials of Rivers and Imo States organised by the National Boundary Commission (NBC) in Port Harcourt.

Represented by the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Worgu Boms, Engr. Ikuru, who is also the Chairman of the State Boundary Committee, said quick resolution of the boundary disputes has become necessary because the people’s awareness of land resources endowment has engendered disagreements and fight over parcels of land among relations.

He urged the NBC and the Surveyor-General to make the report of the screening exercise of the delimitation instruments on Imo/Rivers inter-State Boundary available to the two States, calling on them to quicken the processes of the demarcation of the boundary.

Speaking at the occasion, the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Sir Jude Agbaso, who was represented by the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Soronnad: Njoku, expressed his State’s commitment to the protection of lives and property through the instrument of the law, advocating for peaceful and accelerated resolution of the boundary disputes between the two States.

Also speaking, the Director-General of NBC, Dr. Mohammed Ahmad, disclosed that the delimitation instruments for the definition of the common boundary between both States had been screened and authenticated, stating that the meeting in Pot Harcourt was meant to discuss programmes of actions for the forth-coming field exercise.

He said that the meeting resolved among other things that the States and the affected Local Government Areas should ensure peaceful co-existence pending the final determination of the boundary.
