Govt Constitutes Taskforce On Traffic Flow
The Anambra Government says it has constituted a special taskforce to decongest roads during the Christmas and New Year festivities.
The Commissioner for Special Duties and Transport, Mr Robert Okonkwo made this known while addressing newsmen in Awka.
Okonkwo said members of the taskforce were drawn from the Army, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp, the state Traffic Agency and vigilante groups.
He said that the taskforce would be headed by the Sector Commander of FRSC, Mr Ayobami Omiyale, adding that intensive operation would be mounted in about 21 flash points in cities and the suburbs across the state.
According to him, the measure is to ensure that the people do not suffer unnecessary traffic gridlock during the celebration.
Okonkwo named the flashpoints to include Onitsha head bridge, Upper Iweka, Owerri Road, Nkpor Junction, Nkwelle-Ezunnaka, Zik Avenue and Aroma Junction in Awka.
He said the problematic spots in the hinterland included Nwagu-Agulu Junction, Ekwulobia Round about, Afor Nnobi Roundabout, and Nkwo Ogbe Ihiala.
He further said that 290 FRSC personnel and 200 retrained workers of the state traffic agency had been deployed to man the spots with the police and army team.
The commissioner urged the public to cooperate with the taskforce and report any erring member to his office.
He assured the people of the state, especially those coming home for the festivities of a friendly and secure environment.
