Gawuna Emerges YSFON National President
The Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON) over the weekend in Abuja elected Dr Nasiru Gawuna, its Vice-President (North-West), as its new National President.
Gawuna was returned unopposed at the 2011 YSFON National Delegates Conference, attended by 68 of the expected 90 delegates.
Tidesports gathered reports that the elective delegates were drawn from the federation’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and its chapters in all the states and the FCT.
Gawuna, who is also the Chairman of the Kano State chapter of YSFON, scored 61 votes in the election, where seven delegates abstained from voting.
He replaces Alhaji Jamiu Ojulari, who died on Sept. 13, after some illness.
Also, Mr Tom Agi was elected the new Deputy National President of the federation unopposed, after polling 49 votes, with six votes declared void and 13 delegates abstaining from voting.
The election was conducted by the electoral committee, chaired by retired Navy Capt. R.A. Ajao, after conducting the processes leading to the polls.
Ajao stressed that Gawuna and Aki were the only candidates who put forward their candidature for the posts at the close of nomination.
In his acceptance speech, Gawuna, who is also a former Chairman of the Nasarawa Local Government Council in Kano State, pledged that he would run a transparent administration, while operating an open-door policy in managing the federation’s affairs.
“Today’s (Saturday’s) elections have been transparent, with no acrimony and ill feelings. We thank all the delegates for this.
“I and the others in the NEC will also reciprocate this with a transparent administration.
“Not only that, I will operate an open-door policy and we will partner with all the relevant bodies to ensure that we are where we are supposed to be, in terms of nurturing Nigerian sports talents from the grassroots,” Gawuna said.
