Federation To Promote Sardauna Cup Competition
The Fives Federation of Nigeria (FFN) says it intends to immortalise the late Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello, and promote the game of Fives with the introduction of the Sardauna Cup championship.
The Tidesports reports that Fives is a corrupt form of the game of Squash that involves a player using his palm to hit a Tennis ball on a wall.
Umar Lambu, the FFN Secretary, told Tidesports on Wednesday in Lagos that the championship was slated for Dec. 18 to Dec. 25 in Zaria.
He said that the aim of the championship was to identify young talents that could be groomed to represent the country in international championships.
“We use this opportunity to identify talents. The tournament is in three categories; we have the senior, junior and then the intermediate.
“And seize that opportunity to develop Fives in the country through identification of talents. We have to get younger ones that would be trained up to the level they can represent the country in some events.”
Lambu said that the championship was postponed from the first week in December to Dec. 18 due to some logistic constraints on the part of the hosts.
He said that the federation was working assiduously to introduce the sport to other parts of the country.
