Expert Blames Bulding Collapse On Politics
A building expert in Port Harcourt, Nwafor Andrew has blamed the cause of building collapse across the country on the influence of politicians and those who are close to government who do not give respect to regulations, but use political platform to cut corners.
Speaking in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, Andrew who is a civil engineer said that so many people like to take short-cuts to execute their projects, pointing out that above 70 per cent of developers and contractors do not have government approval before embarking on property development.
To such group of people engineer Andrew said “They believe that it is a waste of time to get government approval, since they are closer to the authority that be, and then would not listen to professional advice on some matters of importance.”
According to him “The activities of some highly placed people who are in politics in terms of advice have made things look as if experts are compromising or do not know their job, where as these people carry over the style they apply in politics to building development where they think that every thing can go on the way they like.”
He also explained that statistical research have, revealed that the private sector is responsible for multiple building collapse, as 70 percent of the collapse are from them, while the public sector is responsible for 23.3 per cent building collapse and about 6.7 percent goes to the corporate body.
Andrew who is also a building contractor in Port Harcourt however urged the public, especially those in politics to avert the danger of taking short-cuts in project execution, and always heed the counsel of building experts in choice of materials and project execution.
