Commissioner Warns On Neighbourhood Sanitation Exercise

Henceforth Sanitary Inspectors would be deployed to residential areas in Port Harcourt and  environs to check the indiscriminate disposal of waste.

The measure, is also, to ensure that the impact of the recently introduced neigbourhood environmental sanitation exercise receive maximum result.

The State Commissioner for Environment  Hon Nyeama Weli gave the indication during an unscheduled visit to some residential areas at the weekend, Port Harcourt. He also decried the behaviour  of some residents who cultivate the  the habit of dropping refuse  at  unauthorised places.

He explained that the Ministry of Environment would  no longer condone the uncivil habit of some residents who defecate and urinate by the road side.

Noting that sanitary inspectors and some of special task force would be empowered to arrest offenders.

Dr Weli said his ministry  cannot afford to ignore the proper disposal of waste during and after  every  monthly sanitation exercise. Hence he said, more vehicles designed  for conveying waste  have been engaged  to cleare waste  to designated spots for  immediately after every monthly sanitation exercise.

He commended residents of the State capital for coming out enmase during the last sanitation to keep their environment clean.

According to him, the city of Port Harcourt must stand out to be  the cleanest  capital  in the  country especially, as the coming CARNIRIV on December 13, 2011 would attract many tourists to the state.
