AIB Submits Eight Reports To Presidency
As part of its statutory responsibilities in ensuring aviation safety, the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) has submitted eight accident reports to the Presidency.
The immediate past commissioner of the Bureau, Dr. Sam Oduselu disclosed this while he was handing over to the new Acting Commissioner, Capt. Muhtar Usman at the AIB’s corporate headquarters in Lagos.
He explained that the fundamental objective of the Bureau was to improve aviation safety in Nigeria by determining the circumstances and causes of air accidents and serious incidents, and to make safety recommendations to prevent recurrence of similar accidents.
He said the reports were sent to the Presidency through the Ministry of Aviation, adding that the bureau under his leadership had made a lot of safety recommendations in the last four years.
“We have alerted the industry through seminar and workshop on some of the discoveries in accident investigation that could impair safety”, adding that the manpower issue which was a critical element in the drive for success was addressed in stages.
“Accidents investigations that were without aviation background were sent to NCAT where they obtained various aviation professional qualifications.
“The technical department was beefed up with seconded staff from NCAA and retired aviation experts and they were all given world class accident investigation professional certification”, he said.
Dr. Oduselu stated that the on-going succession plan was intended to breed the young and talented accident investigators that would take over from the current aged workforce.
He noted that the issues of low wages, disparity and other problems that could breed resentment and industrial disharmony had been addressed through the new salary package, harmonisation and promotion.
