The honourable member representing Andoni/Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency, Hon. Dakuku Peterside, says 35 communities in the Niger Delta may be submerged following the continuous rise in sea level.

Hon Peterside who dropped the hint during “An Evening With Your Representative” on Tuesday in Port Harcourt, said that the plight of these communities located in Andoni, Opobo/Nkoro, Akuku-Toru, Okrika, Bonny and Ahoada-West local government areas, prompted him to sponsor a bill in the House with the view to drawing world attention to them.

“I took a very courageous position on the floor of the House and demanded that some attention should focus on the plight of these Nigerians on the verge of extinction.”

He said that he also sponsored a bill on Governmental Impact Assessment as well as the bill on the plight of Oloibiri in Bayelsa State.

The Federal lawmaker who thanked members of his constituency for their support, said that the situation had further challenged him to go extra miles to represent them in the House.

He contended that as part of his commitment, the constituency’s voice would continue to be heard in the House.

Also speaking, the senator representing Rivers South-East senatorial zone, Senator Magnus Abe, said that Nigeria needs dedicated and courageous leaders to harness her abundant natural resources for the benefit of the people.

The honourable senator described Hon Peterside as a committed and dedicated leader who had put the interest of his constituency above personal interest.

Also speaking, the Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr Chris Oboh who described as no mean feat the passage of the commission’s budget in one week, attributed it to the effort of Hon. Peterside and other sons and daughters of the Niger Delta in the National Assembly.

He said that the commission would soon initiate a partnership arrangement with council chairmen on ways of developing the region.

Earlier, the Administrator of Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority, Dame Aleruchi Cookey-Gam, described the event as the first of its kind in the area.

Dame Cookey-Gam who chaired the occasion said that the people of the constituency made the right choice by electing Hon. Peterside to the National Assembly.
