Toby Urges Caution On Oil Subsidy
The former Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Sir G.T.G. Toby has cautioned Nigerians against making inflammatory remarks over the proposed removal of petroleum subsidy by the Federal Government. Sir Toby who said this while reacting to a lecture on the removal of petroleum subsidy at the Vocational Award Night at the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt North, District 9140, in Port Harcourt, said that making unguarded comments about government would not solve the problem of petroleum distribution in Nigeria.While noting that government’s intention may be misunderstood by Nigerians the former Deputy Governor said that every citizen must be part of the solution to the nation’s problems.
In his lecture entitled “Merit and Demerit of Oil Subsidies”, Professor Ikemkris Ekweozor said that removal of subsidy will not solve the problem bedevilling the petroleum industry in Nigeria.
Ekweozor,, a professor of Environmental Biology in the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, (RSUST) Port Harcourt, stressed the need for the Federal Government to build more refineries and make the existing ones more productive.
The university don also urged the Federal Government to check the rate of corruption in the country.
In his reaction to the lecture, Chief Sunnie Chukwumela also urged the Federal Government to rethink the decision to remove subsidy.
Meanwhile, the President of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt North, Rotarian Emma Ogbonda says the club is committed to providing seminar to the people.
The president said that the club recently participated in the polio eradication programme amongst others.
Highpoint of the event was the presentation of merit awards to some distinguished Nigerians.
