Schools Jostle For Honours At Scrabble Tournament
No fewer than 100 schools in Lagos on Monday commenced jostling for honours at the second edition of the Secondary Schools Scrabble Tournament tagged “Fryda Scrabulympics’’ scheduled to run through November 3.
The Tidesports reports that the four-day tournament holding at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Sports Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere is sponsored by Fryda Nigeria Ltd., a communications company.
The tournament’s director, Adetona Ogunkomaya, told The Tidesports that the success of last year’s edition, where 50 schools participated, propelled the continuation of the tournament.
He said that the motive of the competition was to help students understand and speak good English through improving their vocabulary.
Ogunkomaya also said that participation in the game would also improve the reasoning abilities of students and increase their mental alertness.
He added that the competition would also be used to discover future potential who could represent the state or the country in both local and international competitions.
“Sequel to the success of the first edition, it gave the sponsors the courage to sustain the competition which 100 schools are taking part.
“Scrabble is not only a sport, it’s a game that increases physical and mental alertness and helps students to understand English language, which has been a problem in our schools,’’ he said.
Ogunkomaya urged the students to put in their best to excel in the tournament, organised by the Lagos State Scrabble Association.
