RVHA Moves To Enforce Ban On Siren Use

The Rivers State House of Assembly has moved to effect the ban on the use of siren and strict compliance on other traffic laws in Rivers State.

The move was sequel to a motion by Hon. Ibiso Nwuche, representing Ahoada East Constituency 11 in the Assembly.

Hon. Nwuche, through his motion on the Point prayers, informed the House of the , “indiscriminate use of siren by Banks, Security Agencies, Corporate organisations, and individuals, which complicate the traffic situation in Port Harcourt and put the state on the Pedestrian of a lawless state, with further discouragement to investments”.

The lawmaker also decried the “mockery of laws by expirates companies through the Nigerian Security Operatives who violates our traffic laws by the use of vehicles attached with sirens to convey employees”, in his prayers Hon. Nwuche, urged the House to “direct the Nigerian Police under the command of Rivers State Police Commissioner to strictly enforce all traffic laws including outright ban of the use of sirens in the state”. He also stated that the comptroller General of TIMARIV should be invited to brief the House on plan to arrest the chaotic traffic situation in Rivers State.

In his contribution Hon. Ben Horsefall said the House should check the excesses of TIMARIV, which he said acted beyond the limits of the law. He urged the House to immediately direct TIMARIV to remove the blockage on Tombia and Omerelu street in GRA Port Harcourt, “which had subjected road users to harassment”.

Other lawmakers also supported the motion, seeking immediate intervention of the House as part of oversight function to safe Rivers people from difficulties.

Ruling the Speaker of the Assembly,  Rt. Hon. Otelemaba Amachree, thanked the mover of the motion, and refered the issue to the Transport Committee to investigate the matter and report to the Assembly in two weeks.

The Speaker also directed the clerk to invite the Rivers State Commissioner of Police for a meeting with the Speaker.
