Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Fred Igwe, has said that the ministry will soon embark on re-registration of Dolphins FC players that won the 2010/2011 Nigeria Premier League.
Hon Igwe who disclosed this while fielding questions from sports journalists shortly after the arrival of Dolphins FC in Port Harcourt at the weekend also said that the ministry would also sign-on quality players capable of re-engineering the team to embark on defending its NPL title and at the same time win the CAF champions league.
“The sports ministry would ensure that it re-registers the players that won the NPL tittle and sign quality players to enable the team defend the title in the next season.
We will also re-engineer the team, by putting necessary logistics and support in place for higher productivity,” Hon Igwe said.
The commissioner further revealed that the ministry had concluded plans to commercialise sports in the state as it is obtainable in other countries of the world, pointing out that government alone could not develop sports.
“I said it before that we are going to commercialise sports in this state as it is obtainable in other parts of the world.
Everything is worth a trial. This Dolphins reception today, I know what corporate organizations have put in,” he stated.
Hon. Igwe explained that the ministry was also doing everything possible to bring back fans to match venues, adding that from next season, marketing and publicity of the premiership matches would be enlarged.
“The Ministry of Sports is doing everything possible to ensure that spectators are back to match venues that is why we are expanding publicity and marketing,” Hon Igwe explained.
