Rivers State government, says that 23 mini stadia would be constructed across the local government areas of the state, as part of grassroots sports development in the state.

The state commissioner for Sports, Hon Fred Igwe disclosed this at a press briefing organised by the Nigerian Swimming Federation (NSF) to kick-start the 9th African Junior Swimming Championship, yesterday at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Sports Complex, Port Harcourt.

Hon. Igwe further stated that the sports ministry has concluded arrangements to organize inter-local government sports competition next year.

According to him, the competition is to ensure that the state has abundant talents in all sporting events.

“The state government led by, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi is planning to build one mini stadium in each of the 23 local government areas in the state.

We want to ensure that the youths are engaged meaningfully and discover more talents,” he emphasized.

Speaking at the occasion the chairman of main organizing committee (MOC) of the championship, Fashina Thomas stressed the need for local government chairmen to build at least 25 metres swimming pool.

According to him, such swimming pool would make the sports popular and help to discover swimmers that would represent the country in international tournaments.

“If all the local government chairmen build swimming pools in their areas, the state would have good swimmers because it is good to catch them young.

“We are excited and overwhelmed over the standard of the swimming pools we saw in Rivers State,” he stated.
