NURTW Urges FRSC To Arrest Drivers
The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Bauchi, has called on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to arrest any driver carrying passengers in the boot of their cars.
Speaking with newsmen in Bauchi last Thursday, the Chairman of the Union, Alhaji Sulaiman Adamu, said the action was condemnable and that such drivers were playing with the lives of the passengers.
He said that the NURTW was strict in its operations in motor parks, adding that drivers who were carrying passengers in the boot were not patronising the designated parks.
“We in the NURTW are totally against carrying passengers in the boot as it is inhuman and degrading, drivers who are engaging in such activity do not make use of the motor parks,’’ he said.
He also warned drivers against recklessness during the festive period like Sallah as festivities were meant to be period for joy, drivers should not make the relations and friends of passengers to be sorrowful as a result of their carelessness.
According to the chairman, “we have been speaking with the authorities concerned to provide more parks so that every commercial driver will find a space to park his vehicle and it will guard against the habit of picking passengers by the road sides.
He pointed out that NURTW would soon embark on the enlightenment of its members through the use of jingles on radio and television to imbibe decent driving culture.
Adamu said that the union would also seek the assistance of the FRSC and the government to remove pockets of temporary motor parks in the Bauchi city, especially those along Jos and Maiduguri roads.
