The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) Olympic Solidarity Sports Administration course says it will train sports administrators at various universities in the country.

The training is to keep the administrators up-to-date on new rules, regulations and changes in the Olympics charter.

The Committee’s Sec-Gen, Tunde Popoola, said during the opening ceremonies of the course on Monday that the course was targeted at the tertiary institutions, being hub of grassroots sport development in Nigeria.

He said the universities were considered by the NOC as key stakeholders and benefactors of the emerging changes, adding that the course was particularly targeted at high calibre sports administrators from the various universities.

Popoola said without a coordinated effort in talent identification, the drive for excellence in sports would remain a far cry.

One of the facilitators, Dr Sunny Ikhioya said the trend of the IOC had shifted to youth sports development and course was to keep directors of sports at the universities, abreast of the changing rules.

“With the International Olympic Committees rules and changes in the Olympic Charter, it is very important that they are kept abreast so that they do things right; and that is why we have to organise this type of workshop from time to time.”

No fewer than 15 sports directors from different universities were attending the course, scheduled to run from Nov. 21 – Nov. 23 at the NOC building in Lagos.
