NLNG Moves To Revive Reading Culture Among Youths
The Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) has restated its commitment to improve the standard of reading among schools in its host communities.
The Manager Corporate Communication and Public Affairs, Mr. Ifeanyi Mbanefo said this during the “meet The Author” event organised by the NLNG for both primary and secondary schools in Bonny Island.
Mr. Mbanefo said that the event was organised to foster closer interaction between the children with writers.
“We decided that with a little effort we can bring these writers to dialogue with students and in doing so, realise the dreams of many of our young ones”.
He further explained that, NLNG believed that fostering direct contact between writers and students would go along way in enhancing their reading habit.
Prof. Akachi Ezeigbo whose book: “my cousin Sammy” was the bases for discussion at the event told the students to make reading part of their daily activities.
Prof. Ezeigbo said that this has become necessary as their success educationally depends on reading.
She therefore recommended the establishments of libraries in all schools in the country while further admonishing the students to form neighbourhood book club in their areas.
Meanwhile, Prof. Ezeigbo has stressed the need for improve budgetary allocations to the educational sector.
She said that this is necessary to improve the standard of education in the country.
The author of “my cosine Sammy” who was the 2007 winner of the NLNG prize for literature also urged for infrastructural development at the primary level of education to improve the system.
Some of the staff and students who spoke to newsmen later on described the programme as a step in the right direction. For Mr. Aka Nwokedi, of the HR and services Bonny, the event is interesting and challenging.
“It is a very good start to challenge us to read and write we hope we will have good writers from the children in future”.
Participating schools are NLNG RA Nursery/primary schools, Government Girls Secondary School both junior and senior, Finima, Bonny National Grammar School junior and senior Bonny Community Secondary School junior and senior.
