The people of Igbo Etiti Local Government in Enugu State, have appreciated an NGO, the Sam Otoboeze Foundation, for donating educational materials to primary schools in the area.

The materials comprise exercise books, chalks and biros worth N400,000.

The traditional ruler of Ihekurem Aku community, Igwe Chris Okwor,  told newsmen in Nsukka recently that such gesture would go a long way in improving the quality of education in public primary schools since the government could not do it alone.

“For public schools to improve, individuals and NGOs should complement government’s efforts.

“Other organisations and wealthy individuals should emulate the foundation by assisting the government to improve the education sector.

“The type of education given to children in any country determines its bright or bleak future,Okwor said.

A senior lecturer at the Prof. Marcel Agu, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, said that what the foundation’s gesture remained indelible since the best gift one could give a child was quality education.

“I applaud the foundation in its determination to improve the quality of education in public primary schools.

“Our children are the future leaders of this country, and for them to compete favourably with their counterparts globally, they must be equipped with quality education,” Agu said.

He attributed the poor quality of education in public schools to inadequate funding, saying that government should ensure that public schools in the country regained their lost glory.

“There is no magic a lecturer will do in higher institution if a good foundation was not laid in primary and post-primary schools for any child,” he said.

Mrs Chinyere Ngwaka, a secondary school teacher, said the intervention came at the appropriate time when some schools found it difficult to get money to buy chalk for teachers to teach pupils.

“I am happy that some people still have the interest of our future leaders at heart. I urge other people who waste money on unnecessary things to emulate the foundation’s good example.

“My prayer for the founder is that God will replenish his purse so that he will do more to humanity. Headmasters and teachers should ensure that the materials are judiciously used to justify the objectives of the foundation,” Ngwaka said.

“I commend the foundation for this outstanding achievement aimed at alleviating the sufferings of public primary schools,” she said.
