Lecturer Charges Marine Operators On Safety

A lecturer with the Rivers State Polyphonic, Bori, Dr Inibu Job Akien Alli has called on boat operators to be safety conscious at all times.

Dr Akien Alli, who made the call while addressing safety professional students on “predictive Danger to marine Dwellers in Rivers State”, at the school said both sea truck operators and commercial engine boat drivers should ensure that the safety of goods and services as well as their passengers are assured.

According to him, for effective compliance with his exercise, Local Government Councils in the state should be encouraged to set up monitoring teams to carry out routine marine patrol exercises.

He reiterated that operators should be people of sound mind, clear vision and knowledgeable in the field with long experience and physically fit, as to contain all odds that might arise during the operation.

Dr Akien –Alli, a former Health safety and Environment Officer of West Atlantic shipyard, Rivers State, former facilitator, Inspector and Safety Instructor of Intel Logistic company enjoined the students to be good ambassadors by putting into practice what they had learnt during the period.

The lecturer identified ignorance and carelessness as the  main causes of accidents and called for caution during operation.

He also decried the depositing of toxic wastes in our waterways by companies operating within the state and called on the government to carry out direct environmental impact audit before the effect becomes globalised, and enjoined the students to report such companies generating pollution to reduce loss of marine biodiversity and future generation.
