Farmers in Kaduna State have commenced mass production of beans following a successful sensitisation programme by the Kaduna State Agricultural Development Agency (KADP).

The Deputy Director (Media) of the Agency, Mr Shehu Aliyu, disclosed this to our correspondent yesterday in Kaduna.

Aliyu said that the new development was due to farmers’ understanding of the importance of legumes and the need to enhance soil fertility.

He said that the agency, in conjunction with Institute of Agricultural Research (IAR), ABU, Zaria, had commenced the sensitisation of farmers on modern beans production and storage technology.

Aliyu said the agency had also commenced the distribution of assorted improved seeds to farmers to enhance beans production.

The improved seeds being distributed, he said, included ITA 192k, which has high yield and resistant to pest and disease attack.

He said that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, under the aegis of Nitrogen for Africa (N for Africa), an NGO, had provided support to beans and groundnut farmers in four selected local governments in Kaduna State.

According to him, more than 1,000 farmers from the Soba, Giwa, Igabi and Zangon Kataf local governments of the state are participating in the programme.
