Electricity Consumers Want Review Of New Tariff
Electricity consumers in Mubi, Adamawa State have urged the Federal Government to review the proposed new tariff on electricity and adopt practical measures towards actualising its power reform programme.
A cross secton of the residents who speoke to our correspondent decried the move, describing it as untimely.
They expressed concern over the epileptic power supply in the area, pointing out that government should pay more attention to the resuscitation of the power sector instead of introducing new tariff.
The National Electricity Commission (NEC) had announced plans to introduce a new electricity tariff regime as part of measures to encourage investment in the sector.
“It will be more reasonable if the government completes all on-going power projects to ensure stable supply before increasing the tariff”, a television technician, Mr. Dele Rauf said, adding “it is unkind to introduce a new tariff when there is no light”.
According to him, the situation has forced him to rely on electric generator which “costs me much money to fuel”.
Another resident, Suleiman Musa decried the frequent power outage in the area and called for improvement in power supply.
He advocated the adoption of selective measures in the implementation of the new electricity tariff if necessary, should be introduced in metropolitan areas where there is appreciable improvement in power supply.
In Mubi and surrounding villages, Musa said “we are not getting light. Families are living in darkness and yet we settle our bills promptly. It is annoying to pay for the services you are not getting”.
He called for development of alternative energies in the rural communities across the country.
