Deputy Speaker Urges Unity Among Ogonis

The Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon Leyii Kwanee has called on the People of Ogoni to put the sad chapter of their life as a people behind and embrace peace and unity to chart a new course of progress and development.

Hon Kwanee who stated this in Port Harcourt during the 16th Ogoni matyrs memorial celebration.

He noted that the event should be seen as a platform to seal a strong bond of  brotherhood among the Ogoni people to ensure genuine reconciliation.

The speaker called on the people of Ogoni to support the government of Rt. Hon Chibuike Amaechi, stating that “no administration had paid attention to the plight of the Ogonis than the present administration which has given critical positions such as Secretary to Government, Commissioner for Works, Deputy Speaker among others to the Ogonis.

The Deputy Speaker who extolled the virtues of the Ogoni heroes, cautioned against political bickerings among the people and emphasised that “efforts should be geared towards translating the positions held by Ogonis to addressing environmental and infrastructural challenges facing the people.

He urged Ogonis both in diaspora an at home to remain undaunted in the struggle and be ready to make sacrifices to reduce the level of poverty among the people, stating that the key to reducing poverty was to invest in education.

In line with this objective he said a foundation had been set up to ensure that indigent but intelligent Ogoni indigenes attain education through scholarship scheme.

The Deputy Speaker also stated that an industrial Green City will soon be established in Ogoniland to provide safe environment and generate employment to the people.
