400 Umuechem Indigenes Get Free Medical Treatment
About 400 indigenes of Umuechem community of the Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State, have benefited from free medical out reach organised by Canaan Peace Women and Community Development Initiative (CAPWOCODI) in conjunction with Connecting Peace Initiative (CPI) and Christian Women in Mission Foundation.
The programme which took place at the Umuechem community Town Hall involved free HIV/AIDS testing and counseling, free eye test deworming exercise and blood test.
The Executive Director of the Canaan Peace Women and Community Development Initiative (CAPWOCODI), Mrs Christie Iwezor said that the programme was to identify with the community in its activities to mark the tenth anniversary of the Umuechem massacre.
Mrs Iwezor said that the programme would also help to sensitise the community on the need to be conscious of their health.
“We are here in Umuechem today to support them to assist them in knowing their health status,” she said.
The Executive Director used the occasion to thank the community for their support and cooperation and stressed the need for them to key into the programme in the interest of future generations of Umuechem people.
Also speaking Mrs Ifeoma Anozie of Christian Women in Mission Foundation said that the programme aims at mobilizing people at the grassroot to know their health status. She also said that the programme was to add colour to the celebration.
According to her, the deworming exercise will help to reduce the effect of haemathiasis in the community, while the BP testing will help members of the community to know their blood pressure, with the view to take any action.
Also speaking, Mr Silvester Okoduwa of Connecting Peace Initiatives (CPI) said that the three organisations decided to partner together to assist the community in improving its health status.
