The Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Nkpolu, Port Harcourt will tomorrow honour 25,917 graduands who have successfully met the basic requirements for the award of degrees, at its 19-23rd combined convocation ceremony.
The university would also as part of the marathon convocation ceremony honour two eminent Nigerians, the Senate President, David Mark and business mogul, High Chief (Dr) O.B Lulu Briggs, both of whom would be conferred with honorary doctorate degrees.
According to the university authorities, the breakdown of the figure shows that 3,552 graduands would bag higher degrees while 22,367 others would receive their first degrees.
The university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Barineme Fakae, disclosed this while briefing the press in Port Harcourt, yesterday.
Prof Fakae recalled that the university had its last convocation in 2005, two years before he became the institution’s Vice-Chancellor from November, 2007.
He noted that he was on a rescue mission in the institution which explained why he had been busy putting things right, adding that his administration’s total commitment had led to most of the successes recorded in the university.
According to him, “the university had its last convocation in 2005 and I came in the later part of 2007 and from 2007 when I came on board till date, it has been years of hard work in ensuring that the dreams of the founding fathers are achieved. This is why we have worked tirelessly and by the convocation which would take place tomorrow, it would be 22nd and 23rd, making the university to graduating about 25,917 people in different categories of higher degrees, diplomas and certificates”.
Prof Fakae assured that all those who met the requirements of the various faculties and passed the prescribed courses would receive their certificates with the alpha numerical numbers with more authenticity than previous ones issued by the university.
He also said that participants at this year’s convocation were graduates who completed their programmes in academic sessions between 2004 and 2010.
He said that his administration would not be deterred by the university’s past poor academic records and cultism which he met in 2007, which made it difficult for the university to have an integrated system , adding that he was determined to turn things around in the university which was why he decided to improve on the infrastructure, and engage heads of departments in training to enable them handle accreditation matters effectively.
