The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), says it is in the process of returning unspent funds running into millions of naira into the coffers of the state government.
RSIEC Commissioner in charge of Civic Education and Communication, Mr Nimi Walson-Jack who gave the hint in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt said the unspent funds were from the last local government elections.
Reacting to demands by the Association of Frontline Political Parties in the state to the effect that RSIEC should account for funds received from the state government, Walson-Jack observed that RSIEC was not indebted to any political party as far as the local government election were concerned.
While admitting that the sum of N8million was budgeted for each of the political parties, the commissioner however said that all the elections could not meet up the standard stipulated by the commission in the conduct of the elections.
However, in a press briefing in Port Harcourt, the leadership of the association of Frontline Political Parties in Rivers State, accused the commission of short charging them through the adoption of the concept of prorate in disbursement of funds.
The Association chairman, Prince Uchechukwu who briefed the press on the issue also wants RSIEC to account for the sum of N4.7billion disbursed to it by the government to let by the government.
“We want the current official of RSIEC to come out openly before they leave office to tell Rivers people what they did with the money group demanded.
