The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari has said the steps taken by the Rivers State Government to de-silt drains, canal in and around the State Capital is aimed at putting an end to flooding in Port Harcourt.

Mrs Semenitari who stated this during her monthly Press briefing in Port Harcourt, stated that a Committee has been put in place by Governor Amaechi to study and implement all recommendations and measure to avert flooding in Port Harcourt and its environs.

The Commissioner identified the main cause of flooding in any part of the country to the dumping of solid waste materials into drains and canals, thereby making it difficult for free flow of water into the ocean.

According to her, unwholesome acquisition of land and building of houses on waterways within cities is also part of the reason which often led to washing away of buildings in the event of terrible flooding.

The Commissioner therefore appealed to residents of Port Harcourt and its suburbs to desist from the unwholesome habit of dumping refuse and other solid waste into drains and canals.

She however said that although the flood Management Committee is an adhoc arrangement, the State Government might set up a permanent body to ensure that the State Capital and other areas do not experience any flooding in future.
