Wife  of  the Bayelsa State Governor, Mrs Alayingi  Sylva, has  urged  women and  female teenagers in secondary schools  in the state to under go screening of breast and cervical cancer for early detection.

The Governor’s wife who stated this in Yenagoa,  during the “Walk For Life Against Cancer”  programme, it was to draw attention to the global phenomenon that she decided to organise  the week -long  event  was aimed  at creating  awareness of the killer disease among the women folks.

Hundreds of  women , including the Governor ‘s wife matched through the streets of Yenagoa to create awareness  on the fight against cancer.

Stressing  that  cancer was worst than HIV/AIDS diseases ,Alayingi  urged the women to take advantage of the  free cancer screening programme  and shun being ignorant.

Alayingi said HIV/AIDS diseases  could be administered  on ante-retroviral drugs and still live their normal lives ,but it is not so for cancer patients.

“I’ve seen many people  that died of cancer. I’ve visited a woman currently in the hospital. As I walked into the hospital to see the cancer patient, I could not sleep throughout that night. All I could was to encourage the patient to pray with her and her family. It could happen to anybody.”

According to her, if the cancer diseases was detected early enough , the patient  could not have been lying in that hospital.

Alayingi enjoined   female  teenagers in  the state to embrace the free vaccination against breast and cervical cancer sponsored by her Non-Governmental Organisation(NGO), Centre for Gender Values.
