The Chairman of Awgu Local Government Council in Enugu State, Chief Uche Anioke, has tasked media practitioners in the country to ensure accurate news reporting to ensure stability and development of society.

Anioke made the call on Monday in Awgu, near Enugu during a facility tour of the council by members of the Enugu State Chapter of the NUJ, led by the Chairman of the chapter, Mr Rockefeller Ogboso.

Anioke said that accurate news reporting by the media would enable policy makers to be aware of their responsibilities to the people they were elected to serve.

“The people in the rural areas rely on you to know what is happening. You can only do that when you tell them the truth through radio, television or newspaper reports.

“This is one profession that must be done with respect. You should also join hands in promoting the image of the country nationally and internationally,” he said.

The council chairman also tasked the union to fish out fake and non-professionals among them to be able to protect the image of the profession.

He advised journalists to avoid compromising their jobs because of money and selling their conscience but to report accurately what they observed.

The chairman, however, commended the NUJ Chairman for his initiative in building the ultra-modern NUJ Resource Centre in Enugu.

In his remarks, Ogboso, commended the effort of the council in initiating people-oriented projects.

Our correspondent reports that some of the projects executed by the council include a multi-purpose conference centre at the headquarters of the council, traditional rulers’ office and conference hall as well as renovation of the old council secretariat.

Other projects include the rehabilitation of the 52.5 km Awgu road, starting from Akpachi in Nkanu West through Awgu to Lokpanta.

The council had also provided a Hilux van for police patrol in the area and also built a new Magistrates’ Court with judges’ chambers.

It employed 200 indigenes of the area and sponsored some youths to Songhai Farms in Benin Republic on agricultural training.
