VC Faults Quota System In Nigerian Education

The Vice Chancellor of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Nkpolu, Port Harcourt, Prof Barineme Fakae, has criticised the quota system adopted in the Nigerian educational programme saying it is counter-productive.

Prof. Fakae, who faulted quota system in Nigeria’s education, in an exclusive interview with The Tide recently, said as far as qualitative teaching and learning is   concerned, quota system should not be applied in the institutions of learning.

The university don, noted that the system would not help the nation to grow educationally, stressing that it would rather kill the educational system.

According to him, “It is  not good to  use politics in running education, if you have  the  best teacher, he or she  should be taken, no matter  where he  comes from. It is only in doing that, that would get to the desired  position”, he advised.

“I think the quota system will not help us as a people. It will continue to kill our  education. Let’s take the best and the merit should carry the day. We  have done our post Unified Matriculation Examination (UME ) and the result  would soon be released, without anybody influencing the list. No preferential list, not even from the Governor”, he said.

He noted that the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), has since 2004 not admitted more than 150 law students  and regretted that the institution used to   admit over 600 even when the carrying capacity is 150.

The vice chancellor noted that the teacher must know his student by name and that can only be possible if the teacher has a manageable capacity to handle.

He was optimistic that things will get better if only we can abide by the standard and vision of our founding fathers.
