Senate Lauds Rivers Dev Strides
The Senate Adhoc Committee on Bureau of Public Enterprises(BPE) says Rivers State is now on the path of transformation under the Governor Chibuike Amaechi-led administration.
Chairman of the Committee, Senator Ahmed Lawan made the declaration when he and other members of the Committee visited Governor Amaechi at Government House, Friday in Port Harcourt.
Senator Lawan who led the team to carry out a first-hand assessment of government owned privatised firms in the state said, “Rivers State has witnessed tremendous progress. Infact from a distance I as an individual always admired what you have been able to achieve in Rivers. We want to see a replication of these kind of tremendous progress across the country.”
The Yobe North Senator called on the federal government to latch on the development strides in Rivers State in order to deliver dividends of democracy to the citizenry.
He informed the governor that the visit was sequel to a motion on the floor of the Senate in July to investigate the circumstances surrounding the controversial sales of some government owned corporations by the Bureau for Public Enterprises since 1999.
The Senate Adhoc Committee chairman noted that once the committee concludes its investigations, it would submit its report and expressed the hope that their recommendations would inject efficiency and bring about increased benefit to the economy.
He thanked the governor for the warm reception and support given to them by the government and people of the state during their two-day visit.
Responding, Rt. Hon Amaechi expressed appreciation to the committee for finding time to visit him stressing that their assignment is sensitive and crucial to the development of the country.
Amaechi remarked,” whatever you find, the national interest should be uppermost in your mind,” adding that “efforts should be made to encourage investors and not to drive them away”.
He also enjoined the senators to ensure that they make laws on the proper utilisation of the nation’s assets.
The governor wished them peaceful and fruitful stay in the state in the course of their assignment and promised to assist them achieve their mission in any way he could.
