The Rivers State Government has reiterated that effective road traffic control and management is essential to the building of a modern transportation system.

The Transport Commissioner, Hon. George Tolofari who stated this at the passing out parade of Batch B Trainees and Launching of TIMARIV Flag at Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre, Aluu in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, said the task of road traffic control and management is challenging and had prompted the state government to decide that TIMA-RIV field officers should go through a formal training before they were deployed to the roads.

According to him, now that they had successfully completed their training, they should leave above board and discharge their duties accordingly.

He warned the trainees to prove themselves worthy of the training as well as regard the uniforms they are going to wear.

The commissioner called on the public to partner with TIMARIV in the task of road traffic control and management, and also warned road users to obey traffic rules and regulations in order to avoid arrest and prosecution by TIMARIV officials.

In his speech, the speaker, Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Otelemaba Amachree, expressed delight over the government decision and commended the trainees for their dedication and commitment, and called on the Management of TIMARIV to distribute manuals to drivers to assist and educate them in their daily operations.

The speaker, who was represented by Hon. Sam Eligwe, representing Ahoada-West Constituency also enjoined TIMARIV officers that drivers who committed minor offences should only be warned and advised.

Also speaking, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Suleiman Abba who was represented by Mr Zaki Ahmed said he was impressed with the precision of the cadets during the parade, and enjoined them to shun acts capable of tarnishing their image like bribery and corruption.

Earlier, the Controller-General of TIMRIV, Mr Nelson Jaja assured all road users of improved and better services from his officers, and appealed for more funds to enable the organisation carry out its duties effectively.

A total of 197 trainees passed out at the colourful ceremony.
