Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State has assured the Federal Government that the state government would supervise the demolition of illegal structures and shanties on the service lane of Onitsha-Enugu road.

Reconstruction work on phase 1 of the road started a week ago from River Niger Head-Bridge axis of the road in Onitsha.

Obi gave the assurance on Saturday while inspecting the ongoing work on the project as well as markets that had encroached on the service line of the road.

He said it was sad that traders had encroached on the road by constructing makeshift structures and leaving a section of the road unkempt.

Obi directed the chairmen of Onitsha North and Onitsha South councils to serve the traders abatement notice warning in order to leave and stop trading where they are trading now.

He also enjoined them to ask owners of billboards and sign-posts to remove them.

The governor had last week assured Works Minister Mike Onolememen of the state government’s resolve to conduct routine inspection of the road projects to ensure scheduled completion.
