Lagos Shuts Multi Choice Over Unpaid Tax

The Lagos State Government last week shut down the Head Office of Multi Choice Nigeria, owners of DSTV satellite television, over unpaid tax of about N150 million.

Reports says that the office was shut down by officials of the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service, (LIRS) after the satellite pay-TV outfit failed to remit the money to the government.

Special Adviser to Governor Babatunde Fashola on Taxation and Revenue, Mr Bola Shodipo, who confirmed the closure said that the action was taken to make the firm fulfil its obligation to the government.

Shodipo, who frowned at the rampant indebtedness of companies in tax payment, said the practice was undermining the revenue generation drive of the state government.

He vowed that the state government would not relent in going after companies who failed to voluntarily honour the payment of their taxes.

The special assistant, however, said discussions were ongoing between the state government and officials of the embattled firm over the issue, saying that the government might consider early re-opening of the shut office as soon as the money was remitted.
