Igbos In Diaspora Laud Group For Empowering Women

The Council, City of  New York, United states of America, USA  has commended  Umuada Igbo Nigeria National Committee for UN-Women for  their unwavering commitment in empowering women today and generations to come.

The world body also praised them for their tireless efforts in honouring both mothers and grandmothers respectively.

Making the commendation in a proclamation  signed by the Speaker, Council of New York City,  Christine C. Quinn,  on the occasion of the launching of Umuada Igbo Nigeria National Committee on UN  Women and Home Coming Initiative Project, held recently at the UN  Headquarters in New York,  the council further said: “That the council of the city of New York is proud to honour the Umuada Igbo Nigeria National Committee for UN Women – The Tracing your Ancestral Roots Projects”.

Speaking to newsmen in Enugu, on their return from the New York City, the founding President-General of Umuada Igbo Nigeria, Dr. Kate Uzoamaka Ezeofor, expressed their readiness to participate fully in raising the United Nations (UN) profile by spreading the work, programmes and projects of the world body among women, especially Igbo women of Nigeria and in the diaspora and their children.

Dr. Ezeofor in the address, presented at the occasion in New York City, explained that their decision to launch the two projects at the UN, was informed by their interest and determination in identifying with the activities of UN, as well as  trace  the roots of some of “our African American brothers and sisters based on the information we gathered”.

She, therefore, called on other interested people to come forward with useful clue or information that would assist them trace the roots of more of “our African American brothers and sisters”.

According to her, while attending a workshop in Abuja, eight years ago, she met a resource person from Haiti, who appeared to be fascinated by the inscription in her Umuada Igbo Nigeria attire, and requested to be enlightened.

Dr. Ezeofor said after her explanation, the man told her that their grandfathers passed on to them that they are Ibos, pointing out that the revelation gave her sleepless nights on what to do about the Igbo race of “my African American brothers and sisters”.

Expressing happiness over the numerous achievements of Umuada Igbo Nigeria, Dr. Ezeofor further said during the colourful  ceremony that “Today is the happiest day for Umuada Igbo Nigeria. The journey that started about 13 years ago , for the sole aim of helping the needy in our society is today climaxed with meeting the pillars of United Nations”.
