Fire Disrupts Activities At Secretariat Complex
Activities at the Point Block of the Rivers State Secretariat Complex came to a halt yesterday afternoon, following an electrical fire that erupted from one of the power panels at the third floor of the building.
The fire which was quickly checked by some staff and security personnel would have spread to other floors, as staffers and visitors in the building scampered for safety as a result of an alarm raised by one of the security personnel.
Although no property or lives were lost, the State Fire Service arrived the scene later to arrest the situation.
A meeting of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr George Feyii with staffers was abruptly ended as a result of the scare.
The incident also attracted the Head of Service, Mrs Esther Anucha and other top government officials.
Speaking to newsmen after the arrival of the State Fire Service Department and subsequent assessment of the scene, Mr Feyii submitted that the situation has been brought under control.
The SSG said that the problem was as a result of electrical fault from the third floor, noting that electricians had been directed to take assessment of the situation and trace the faulty electrical line to avert recurrence.
Also, the Director of the State Fire Service, Engr. Oshohari Bawa confirmed that the fire was as a result of electrical fault adding that although the effect of smoke went up to the 13th floor, the source has been quenched.
He warned against the use of water to put out fire of such nature.
