Ex-Legislator Blames Insecurity On Lack Of Synergy
Former member of the Enugu State House of Assembly and President, Civil Society Organization, Coalition For Good Governance, Barrister Nwabueze Ugwu, has blamed the current alarming rate of insecurity in the country, especially the incessant bomb blasts in parts of Nigeria on lack of synergy between the police and other security agencies.
The ex lawmaker, said that until the nation’s security agents wake up from their slumber, work as a team and begin to nip crimes in the bud, Nigeria would continue to face security challenges which he said, if not addressed would threaten the continued corporate existence of the entity called Nigeria.
In a press statement tagged “The Murder of Citizen Ugwu Sunday Ugwu ,12 years on- the Precursor Soaring State of Insecurity and Terror in some parts of Nigeria”, the human right activist, regretted that despite the fact that “members of Boko Haram had always made public its timetable of terrorism before execution , the security operatives still find it difficult to smash them.
He frowned at the inability of the police to fish out killers of his brother 12 years after he was murdered by yet to be identified gunmen at his residence in Enugu, insisting that any government that is not capable of securing the lives and property of its citizen was not fit to exist.
According to him, a decade and two years after his brother was killed, “We cried for justice so as to bring the perpetrators of this gruesome killing to book, but nothing significant has been done so far. This scenario that has left the hoodlums walking the streets tall may have encouraged other terrorists to perform their acts with renewed audacity”.
The erstwhile legislator, who also raised alarm on what he called illegal smuggling of arms and ammunition into the country, maintained that not until the issue is properly addressed, the nation would continue to battle with various crimes especially kidnapping and terrorism .
Barrister Ugwu, therefore, challenged both the nation’s leaders and authorities of various security agencies to rise up to their responsibilities, as no amount of reforms would yield any positive dividend without security in the land.
He also advocated the need for patriotic, focused and visionary leaders that can transform Nigeria from gangsterism to civility, and from under development to an industrial status”.
