The Chairman of Igbo Etiti Local Government in Enugu, Mr Ogbonna Idike, said on Monday that the council paid the West African Examination Council (WAEC) fees for no fewer than 4000 youths.

Idike told newsmen, the council’s administration paid the enrolment fees to raise the educational base of the council.

He said the payment cut across the privileged and indigent persons, adding that the aim was to encourage the youth to subscribe to higher education.

“We did not consider only the less privileged; what we did was to take a roll call of all the students in Senior Secondary Schools (SSS111), who are indigenes of Igbo Etiti and pay their WAEC fees.

“We registered them free of charge; we did not consider whether they are less privileged or not,” Idike said.

The chairman said the council renovated 20 primary schools as well as provided desks for the schools during his four years in office.

Idike explained that he ran an all-inclusive government in which persons of diverse political opinions, comprising adults and youths had a say in its affairs.

He said that party affiliation was not considered in the sharing of amenities, adding that all the stakeholders, including traditional rulers contributed to the good governance of the area.
