Commissioner Condemns Call For Scrapping Of LGs
The Rivers State Local Government Service Commission has described as unnecessary the recent calls for the scrapping of local government councils in the country.
The executive chairman of the commission, Chief Azubuike Nmerukini said this Friday while addressing workers of Akuku-Toru Local Government Council at Abonnema.
Chief Nmerukini who noted that the proponents of the scrapping of local government as councils as designated people, said that local government councils are very necessary in the scheme of things as it is the nearest government to the people at the grassroots.
He, however, stressed the need for councils to create a conducive environment to justify their existence, pointing out that there must be purposeful management of both human and material resources for the overall development of rural areas.
He also expressed the need for civil servants to guide the political class to carry out meaningful development of the grassroots.
Also speaking, the commissioner in charge of Akulga, Mr. Kingston Jaja lauded the high level of cooperation among principal offices of the council.
The council chairman, Mr. Theodore Georgewill said that Akulga has one of the best staff in the Unified local government service system and thanked the state government for appointing experienced personnel to run the commission.
