Security Confab Calls For Credible Intelligence
A One – day joint meeting of heads of security agencies in the South East geo- political zone has ended in Enugu , the capital city of Enugu state with a call on the people of the zone to always give useful and reliable information to security agencies to enable them check criminality in the area.
Making the call last weekend while declaring open the meeting convened by South East Governor’s Forum at the Auditorium, 82 Division of the Nigerian Army Headquarters , Enugu, the General Officer Commanding(GOC) the Division, Major-General S.Y. Bello, regretted that the upsurge of insecurity in the zone had become a source of worry to everyone.
The GOC who was represented on the occasion by Brigadier-General S.Y. Audu, stated that incidents of armed robbery attacks on banks had been severally reported, adding that the latest was the attack on a bullion van transporting money from Nsukka to Enugu, during which two police men were reportedly killed.
According to him, recently, some quantity of unexploded improvised explosive device were discovered in Anambra state, pointing out that “There is also cases of cultism in our tertiary institutions and kidnapping for ransom.
He maintained that the precarious security situation in the South East zone has presented security agencies in the area with the challenge of checkmating the activities of perpetrators, reasoning that the challenge requires concerted efforts of all stakeholders to the security threats.
The GOC said that some commentators and public affairs analysts have hitherto adduced the problem of insecurity in the zone to unemployment and poverty.
“To my mind, the menace has no relationship with unemployment and poverty. The menace is rather motivated by the outright desire for criminal acts and the blatant and arrant intention to get rich quick , which are syndromes that have no place in our society”.
