The Rivers State House of Assembly, yesterday, screened eight new nominees recommended by the Rivers State Governor, Rt Hon. Chibuike Amaechi for appointment as Commissioners in the state Executive Council.
The commissioner-nominees who appeared before the State House of Assembly, include four former Commissioners in the state. Ezemonye Ezekiel-Amadi, Dr Tammy Danagogo, Hon George Tolofari and Emmanuel Chinda.
Others include a former member of the House of Representative, Dr Nathaniel Imegwu, Fred Igwe, Charles Okoye and a former member of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon Okey Amadi.
After a screening of the nominees on the floor of the House, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Otelemaba Amachree, who presided over the session, congratulated the nominees. The Speaker urged the nominees to put in their best in their service to the state, and emphasised the need to sustain the spate of development in the state.
The clearing of the eight new commissioners brings the total number of commissioners in Rivers State to fifteen following the screening of seven commissioners by the Assembly earlier.
The state Assembly also gave consideration to the harmonisation of the Local Government Laws in the state. House Leader, Hon Chidi Lloyd, representing Emohua constituency who moved the motion, said it was necessary to consolidate all amendments to the Rivers State Local Government Laws into one document.
Aspects of the local government law that received the critical attention of the House, include Clause 7, Subsection 1 (e) which borders on re-election. Clause 9, sub section 1 which deals with tenure of elected chairmen and councillors, and Clause 44, subsection 2, which deals with the composition of the Local Government Service Commission.
