Rivers NUJ Backs Traditional Wrestling
The Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State Council, Mr Opaka Dokubo has said that the first Niger Delta Smack Down Wrestling Competition recently oranised by Gopecha’s Extreme kicks sports would definitely bring back the lost glory in wrestling in the region.
Mr Dokubo, who made this assertion during a press briefing by the organisers at the NUJ temporary secretariat in Port Harcourt recently said that wrestling had brought fame and glory to many communities in the area and wondered why priority attention was not being given to it presently.
He described traditional wrestling as a sport of fun and entertainment, but regretted the invasion of western sports, adding that there is urgent need to revamp traditional wrestling, especially, in the Niger Delta region.
According to him, it fosters unity and friendship amongst communities and enjoined the organisers to keep up the spirit.
The NUJ Chairman assured the group of the Union’s support in subsequent editions and called on the region’s governments, corporate organisations and sports loving individuals to encourage and support the worthy cause as it would further enhance discovery of talents for future state and national competitions.
