Northern traders under the aegis of the Association of Northern Traders Bench Exchange, Rivers State chapter have joined the rest of their kinsmen elsewhere in the country to agitate for an Islamic banking system.

The traders, who spoke through the chairman of the group, Alhaji Lawal Dawa, Friday in Port Harcourt told The  Tide that Islamic banking with non-interest loan would benefit many Nigerians, regardless of religion and tribes in the country.

He called on Nigerians, irrespective of their religion and tribe to support the banking system, urging that Nigeria should dwell less on the name “Islamic” attached to the proposed banking system.

Dawa used the opportunity to reiterate the group’s commitment to support the Governor Chibuike Amaechi-led administration to achieve the government’s target in term of development and programmes in Rivers State.

According to him, Northerners in the state voted en-mass for Ameachi during the recent governorship election in the state.

He appealed that the state government should involve the northerners in its scheme of programmes and policy in the state.

On sanitation, Dawa said the group always observed special sanitation days, apart  from the regular monthly sanitation by the State Government.

He assured the state government of the group’s  commitment to maintain the peaceful environment restored in the state.

According to him, the northerners, including members of the association, are committed to bring to book any northerner who joins to breach the peace in the state and the nation in general.

It would be recalled that after so much national discourse on the CBN’s intention to approve the operation of Islamic banking in Nigeria, recent reports say that the apex bank has finally granted licence to Jaiz Bank for the operation of Islamic banking in the northern part of the country.
