A Niger Delta-based non-governmental  organisation, Stakeholders Democratic Network (SDN), has called for emergency  action by both federal and state  governments to the clean-up of contaminated water source in Ogale community in the Eleme local government area.

The Executive Director of the Organisation, Mr. Inemo Samiana, who said this  while conducting newsmen round polluted wells in Ogale, said that, the situation has constituted a big health risk to the people.

“We believe that the level of contamination of Ogale constitutes a public health emergency and are calling on all relevant government agencies to step in and work together to protect the lives of people in this community” he said.

The SDN Executive Director also said that the group is working hard to ensure that samples of  the polluted water is sent to all relevant state and federal agencies.

While commending the United Nations Environment

Programme (UNEP) for its reports in Ogoniland, he stressed the need for the federal government to take immediate action  on the report.

Displaying the sample of the polluted water before newsmen, Mr. Nyime Ngelale said that for ten years, people in the area depended on vendors for their source of  drinking water.

Mr. Ngelale said that the situation has further impoverished the people of the area and urged the federal government to come to their aid.
